On February 17, Spain will mark the 45th anniversary of the 1978 Constitution, the longest-lasting in the country’s history. King Felipe VI will preside over a joint session of the Congress of Deputies, an event meant to show unity between the State’s main institutions.

According to institutional sources, the President of the Government has not approved Leonor’s attendance. Without that approval, the Princess cannot be formally included, which is why her presence has still not been confirmed.

Zarzuela Palace wants Leonor to attend, appear alongside the institutions of the State, and gain visibility in an official setting.

Moncloa Palace on the other hand, is reluctant. The Government prefers to limit the public role of the Crown at a politically sensitive moment and is carefully controlling every image linked to the monarchy.
